History of Poetry
Guide to Poetry
Introduction
In the "General" poetry section you will find the Bibliomania guide to the development of poetry since Old English orally-transmitted verse. We have tried to give a broad history of poetry taking in key influences from outside England, but essentially this remains a primarily United Kingdom-oriented selection as befits the poetry that we have on Bibliomania (these are available at all times from the navigation bar on the left of your screen). Hopefully this guide will provide students of English Literature and those with an interest in poetry with a useful sense of the history of that form. As with the fiction and drama introductions, certain exclusions were necessary and are likely to prove controversial but the major writers from each period are referred to and their relevance in the history of poetry explained.

In the future we may not only expand and extend this guide, according to your feedback and suggestions (e-mail them to comments@bibliomania.com ) but also offer other helpful essays and articles here. For more detailed analysis of individual authors and texts, register (this is completely free) and go to the study guides in the Study section of Bibliomania.
