Arundelian Marbles A collection of ancient sculptures collected at great expense by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, and presented to the University of Oxford in 1667 by his grandson, Henry Howard, afterwards Duke of Norfolk. They contain tables of ancient chronology, especially that of Athens, from B.C. 1582 to 264, engraved in old Greek capitals. Date of the tables, B.C. 263. Aryans The parent stock of what is called the Indo-European family of nations. They lived probably in Bactria, i.e. between the river Oxus and the Hindu-koosh mountains. Sometimes called the IndoEuropean, sometimes the Indo-Germanic, and sometimes the Japetic. Sanskrit, Zend, Latin, Greek, and Celtic are, of course, included. |
