Nevil Shute Norway was born in 1899 in London and died in 1960. He worked as an aeronautical
engineer at Vickers in 1924 to work airships in competition with the British Air Ministry. After the
crash of the R101, airship design was written off and Shute set up his own company, Airspeed Ltd.
While doing this he wrote The Lonely Road (published 1931). Shute served in both world wars and
was a commander in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve in World War II, working on secret
projects. He flew his own aircraft to Australia to research On the Beach, before settling there
permanently. His books are based on his own wartime and aircraft industry experiences, and his love
of Australia and its people during war and peacetime. |
